Why I Love a Spring Marathon
Call me strange, many people do, but I actually love winter training. Don’t get me wrong, I do not particularly enjoy training in cold weather but what I love is having a focus during the long winter months. Without that routine, I know I would happily vegetate on the couch until mid-February.
If you are a seasoned marathoner like me, targeting a spring marathon is the perfect way to start the running year. And if you have decided to run your first marathon in the spring, it will set you up for a great year of running. Once you have completed your marathon, 5ks and 10ks will feel like a breeze! I always feel my best marathons happen in the Spring, there’s something about fresh energy, milder weather, and escaping the cold that just suits me. All my best finish times have just so happened to occur in the spring as well.
Kicking off a training plan in January is the perfect reset after the indulgences of the festive period. It gives you purpose and brings consistency back into your routine. Training in cold or less-than-perfect weather builds resilience, you learn to get up in the dark, face the rain, wind, even sleet and snow. That kind of grit strengthens your stamina and perseverance, and teaches you how to handle whatever conditions race day throws at you
Reasons to Run a Spring Marathon
If you are not sold on training through the winter for a marathon here are a few more reasons why I think you should:
- Stay focused through winter. Having a goal on the calendar keeps you consistent when motivation dips.
- Start the year strong. Training through January and February builds early momentum for the rest of your season.
- Beat the heat. Spring races usually mean cool, runner-friendly conditions that help you perform your best.
- Build resilience. Training in rough weather toughens both body and mindset.
- Enjoy ideal recovery timing. A spring marathon gives you months to rest, rebuild, or shift focus before autumn events.
- Stay consistent through the holidays. Knowing you’ve got a race coming up keeps festive indulgence in check.
