is running good for youIf you’ve ever asked, “Is running good for me?” the short answer is, yes.
Running checks a lot of boxes when it comes to health. It strengthens your heart, it helps lower blood pressure, it boosts your lung power and it supports fat loss by burning calories during and after your run. Your bones get stronger too, which matters more than you might think, especially as you age.

Running can also help with sleep. A few consistent runs each week can improve how quickly you fall asleep and how deeply you rest. You might even feel more focused during the day.

And let’s not forget the mental side. Running is one of the best natural mood boosters out there. It clears your head and helps you let go of stress.

So yes, running is good for you, mentally and physically.

And if that’s not enough reasons, here are a few more that might surprise you. They might not make sense until you start, but every runner will tell you they’re the best part.

Running for Weight Loss or Fat Loss

Running can help you lose weight, especially when paired with healthy eating. You burn calories during your runs and continue burning after you finish. If fat loss is your goal, running can be an effective tool to create a calorie deficit.

Running makes you pay more attention to how your body feels. This awareness makes you more thoughtful about what you eat, drink, and how much sleep you get. You might find yourself reaching for more whole foods, drinking more water, and getting to bed earlier. Not because you “should,” but because it makes running feel better.

It’s not about strict diets. It’s about listening to your body and treating it with more respect.

And yes, treats still have their place. There’s something magical about earning that post-run cinnamon bun.

Start small. A couple of 15-minute runs a week can make a real difference. The right amount of running is whatever fits into your life and helps you feel good mentally and physically.

Make sure you take rest days too. Your body needs time to recover and get stronger, that’s part of the process.

You might decide to set a goal, whether it’s running a mile without stopping or training for a race. That goal should feel right for you. Your training needs to match your ability, your schedule, and your lifestyle. It should feel realistic, not something that stresses you out or leaves you burned out and frustrated.

The key is to stay consistent as that is what allows you to progress.  Four runs one week and none for two weeks is not going to work.  It would be better to go for two runs consistently. Make it part of your routine and you will soon see the benefits without overdoing it.

Running can clear your mind like nothing else. You might start the run feeling extremely stressed out but you will come back feeling like you can handle anything. Or at least things don’t seem to appear so bad.

‘I can do hard things’, is a mantra you will hear runners say on repeat.  Running trains you to become comfortable with discomfort.  Pushing through when the little voice in your head is shouting at you to give up; this builds resilience. It hard wires your brain into a can-do mindset.

Your mental toughness skyrockets and you will find that you can manage life’s obstacles with more confidence and calmness.  You will find that you always come back from a run with more determination, more energy and oftentimes with the answer to a problem.  Running teaches you that you are capable of more than you think and that mindset carries through into your daily life.

Running Helps You See The World Differently

Once you start running, you notice things you’ve missed for years. Running your local roads gives you a new perspective of the area you live in.  You will find yourself looking out for good running routes, parks, the flattest roads around you, routes that have toilet facilities along the way!

The next thing you know you will be travelling to different places to run.  Maybe you will become one of thousands of parkrun tourists or you will travel to a race locally or internationally.  

Running Breaks Down Social Barriers

Here’s something people don’t talk about enough, running brings people together.

At a local 5K or marathon start line, everyone’s equal. It doesn’t matter where you are from or what you earn, the  distance is the same for everyone. If you run you are a runner.

Runners , in our experience, are some of the most supportive and welcoming people you will ever meet. It might be a quick nod on the trail or a stranger shouting encouragement during a race, but those little moments make a big difference. You feel like you belong.

If you join a club, online or in person, that sense of connection gets even stronger. You’ve suddenly got a team behind you. You get structure, support, and a place to ask all your questions. And you can chat about running all you want because runners love to talk about running. From routes to race plans to random gear obsessions, there’s always something to share. And before long, you’re not just running, you’re part of something bigger.

Running Helps You Solve Problems

Running has a weird way of solving problems.

You go out for a run with something on your mind. Somewhere around the halfway point, the answer just shows up, or at the very least, things feel a little more manageable.

Some of the best, most down-to-earth advice you’ll ever receive might come during a run or post-run coffee chat. Of course, you’ll also hear some dubious suggestions (“Just duct tape it!”), but that’s part of the fun.

Runners are a surprisingly resourceful bunch, there is always someone who knows someone who can help you out of a pickle, odds are someone in your group has been through what you’re facing and has a solution.

The Best Reasons To Run Might Not Be What You Think

You might start running to lose weight or get fit, but then it turns into something more.

You will feel stronger, sleep better, and think more clearly. You will meet people, explore new places. and you will learn just how much you’re capable of.
