The Benefits of Running - How it Changed my Life Around

The Benefits of Running

If you had told me back in 2010, at the age of 42,  that I would one day run over 40 marathons, write books on running, and start a running club to help others change their lives, I probably would have laughed. At that time, I was not a runner. Not even close.

I was living what you might call an ordinary life. Work, home, family, repeat. Nothing unusual about it, except somewhere along the way, I had stopped paying attention to myself. It all came to a head when I looked at some holiday photos and could not quite believe the person staring back at me. I was overweight, tired, and honestly, not happy with where I was heading.

That moment was a wake-up call. And like many wake-up calls, it was not glamorous or dramatic. It was just one of those quiet realizations: something has to change.

The First Step

The Benefits of RunningSo, I decided to try running. My wife had just started and eventually persuaded me to give it a go.

Now, do not get the wrong idea. I did not lace up my shoes and head out for a 10K. My first runs were short, slow, and honestly, unpleasant. But here is the magic of running: it does not matter where you start. What matters is that you start.

At first, my goal was simple, lose a bit of weight and feel healthier. And yes, the pounds started to come off. But something else happened too. Running began to change not just my body, but my mind. I felt lighter, clearer, more confident. That first 5K gave me a buzz I will never forget. It showed me I could push past limits I thought were fixed.

That feeling became addictive. After the 5K came a 10K. Then a half marathon. And eventually, the full marathon, something I never would have dreamed of back when I was staring at those photos.

The benefits of running surprised me, they went far beyond what I ever expected when I first set out.

The Benefits of Running That I Experienced

benefits of runningYou might be reading this thinking, That is great for you, John, but I am not a runner.

Well, neither was I. And that is the point.

Running has this incredible way of meeting you exactly where you are. It does not care about your age, your fitness level, or your background. It does not demand perfection. All it asks is that you take that first step.

Here are the benefits of running that changed my life:

  • My health turned around. When I first started, I could barely get through a short run without gasping for breath. Over time my lungs felt stronger, my heart healthier, and I had more energy in everyday life. I was no longer out of breath walking up the stairs or playing with my kids.
  • My confidence grew. Crossing the finish line of my first 5K gave me a sense of pride I had not felt in years. Each milestone, from 10K to half marathon, made me believe I was capable of more, not just in running but in life.
  • I found community. Before running, I never realized how supportive and encouraging runners could be. Whether it was a nod from a stranger on a training run or the roar of a crowd at a marathon, I felt like I was part of something bigger. Running has not just given me a community a feel part of but life long friends too.
  • Running gave me freedom. I did not need expensive equipment or a gym to get started. All I needed was a pair of shoes and the road in front of me. Running became my escape, my stress relief, and my time to think.

The best part is that these benefits of running showed up no matter my pace or distance. They came from showing up, week after week, and giving myself the chance to improve.

Setbacks and Comebacks

benefits of runningBut life has a way of testing you. In 2017, I suffered a stroke.

It was caused by an 11mm hole in my heart that no one knew was there. To say it was a shock would be an understatement. One day I was chasing marathon goals, the next I was wondering if I would ever run again.

That could have been the end of the story. For many people, it might have been. But by then, running had given me a toolkit I did not even realize I had been building: resilience, patience, and the belief that progress comes one step at a time.

So, I started again. Slowly. Carefully. Step by step, mile by mile, I rebuilt. Running gave me hope during my recovery, and eventually, it gave me my life back.

That is the journey I share in my book, A Heart for Running. It is about the ups and downs, the triumphs and setbacks, and the lessons I learned along the way. My story is not unique in the sense that everyone faces challenges, but my hope is that it shows you how powerful running is and how it teaches you to face those challenges head-on.

Why We Started Achieve Running Club

benefits of runningAfter everything running gave me, I knew I wanted to give something back.  That is why we started Achieve Running Club.

The idea is simple: create a supportive space where anyone, from complete beginners to experienced marathoners, can find encouragement, structure, and inspiration. Running might feel like a solo sport when you are out on the road, but it is the community that keeps you going when motivation dips.

Along the way, I became a running coach, and one of the greatest rewards for me has been watching new runners gain confidence and start to believe in themselves. Seeing someone go from doubting if they can finish a mile to proudly calling themselves a runner is incredibly powerful.

At Achieve Running Club, we look at the whole picture. Running is not just about how far or how fast you can go. It is about giving your body and mind the tools to thrive. That means paying attention to nutrition, sleep, mindset, and strength training, because all of these play a role in helping you become a better runner. More importantly, they also make you more physically and mentally able to cope with the challenges of everyday life.

The club is about more than just training plans. It is about accountability, shared experiences, and celebrating wins, no matter how big or small. Your first continuous mile is just as important as someone else’s marathon finish. Both are proof of progress.

And just like I experienced, members will discover the many benefits of running for themselves,  better health, stronger confidence, and the joy of belonging to a supportive community.

An Invitation to Start Your Journey

If my story proves anything, it is that you do not need to be born a runner to become one. You do not need perfect health, youth on your side, or a natural gift for speed. What you need is the willingness to try, and a community to support you along the way.
