Pass Running Forward: How Running Supports Mental Health and Community

transform your lifeThe start of a new year can be hard for a lot of people. There is pressure everywhere to feel hopeful, motivated, and ready for a fresh start but the reality is that many people are carrying the same weight into January that they carried through the year before. A change of date does not automatically wipe the slate clean, and for some, it can even make the gap between how they feel and how they wish they felt even more obvious.

Every year we see people suffering from mental health issues and every year we lose far too many people to suicide, many of them were just kids with their whole lives still in front of them. When you look around right now, it feels like so many people are struggling with depression, loneliness, and a deep sense of despair, all while trying to keep going and hold it together on the outside.

I see it more and more, and if I am honest, I have felt it myself at different points. That feeling of carrying a weight you cannot explain, of trying to function while something inside you feels off. It is exhausting, and it can feel incredibly isolating.

Running helps mental health beyond physical fitness

This is why we believe so strongly in running. Not because it fixes everything or magically makes life easier, but because it has a quiet way of helping people cope. Running gives you space to process what is going on in your head, or sometimes just give you a break from it altogether so you have time to gather your thoughts.

Running as a coping mechanism, not a cure

beginner runnerFor a lot of people, running becomes a coping mechanism, a healthy outlet for stress, anxiety, sadness, or frustration. It gives those emotions somewhere to go. Through running, you also meet some incredible people, many of whom may be dealing with their own struggles, even if they never say it out loud. There is something powerful about being around others who understand, simply because they show up too.

If you ask most runners why they run, the answer is rarely about races or times. The majority will tell you they run for their head space, for the way it helps them feel more balanced and grounded. The physical benefits are real too, but they are not what keeps people coming back day after day.

That alone says a lot.

Running gives people structure, connection, and a sense of purpose, especially during difficult periods of their lives.

Pass running forward, one person at a time

This is why we believe runners can make a real difference. We want to encourage more and more people to take up running.  We all can play our part. Imagine if every runner encouraged just one non runner to start this year. A friend, a family member, a colleague who might be struggling more than they let on. Imagine the ripple effect that could create, more people feeling supported, more people finding confidence, more people discovering a simple and accessible way to cope.

The power of community and shared movement

transform your lifeThat is our goal. To encourage more and more people to get into this sport, without any pressure to be a certain type of person to start.  Running is for everyone, all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities.  We can all benefit.

If you are struggling right now, please know that you are not alone in feeling this way. There are far more people carrying similar feelings than you might realise.

And if you already run, your influence matters more than you think. Your example, your invitation or encouragement and your willingness to walk or run alongside someone could genuinely change their life.

Achieve Running Club

This is why we started Achieve Running Club. Not as a corporate, money making scheme, but because we believe deeply in what running can give people beyond fitness. There is soul behind it. It is about bringing running to more people, creating a genuine community, and giving people a place where they feel supported, encouraged, and understood. A place where you can start where you are and not feel like you have to prove anything.

Running won’t solve everything, but it can help people cope, feel better about themselves, and feel less alone.

And sometimes, that is enough to make all the difference.

There are already so many runners in the world. Sometimes I wonder, maybe a little idealistically, what would happen if that number doubled. If every runner helped just one person begin, could that shift something bigger than running itself? Could it change how connected people feel, how they cope, how supported they are?

So Runners, let’s all do our part to Pass Running Forward in 2026.
